A Look at My Project!...

N351DPs early water tests

1/2009 Well I almost have the plane to its 100 hour mark.  So far everything seems to be going AOK.  People ask me if there were anything I would change about the plane and I do not think I would do things all that much differently.  Like any airplane, I wish it were lighter, went faster, went further, and carried more, but all things considered the plane does a nice job of what is asked of it.  I suppose if there is one item that could use a bit of work it is that the plane needs more Yaw stability.  If I get to the point where I have the extra $$$ around, I will probably invest in a yaw damper.  S-tec makes a nice one, but S-tec has recently been sold, hopefully they will continue the product.  I still need to try a few other tricks with the vortex generators.  Other items that could be done to improve the Yaw issue is to enlarge the Vertical tail or try to move the CG forward and unsweep the wings, but it seems that most of the solutions involve some fairly large re-design efforts.  I have also found that the Yaw issue is slowly moving down the list as I get better at flying with my feet.  I still hope to make some incremental improvements to the issue.  BTW some, including myself, have proposed extending the cabin to help move the CG forward.  I now think this would only amplify the yaw issues by adding more side area forward of the CG and that the cabin could not successfully be extended without also extending the tail area aft of CG and increasing its surface area.  This spring I am hoping to devote to becoming more proficient in the water ops.  The plane has been on the water numerous times but I still have not Docked or ramped it.  I need to practice these exercises if I am ever to become a master of my ship.

Enjoy the photos!

The following chapters are a basic attempt to re-document almost ten years and over 7500+ hours of building,  I have had a lot of encouragement and positive feedback about this website.  But the truth is I really prefer NOT to spend the free time at the computer.
I have listed the chapters in the rough order my Aircar was constructed.  The later chapters tend to be better documented than the earlier ones.  PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER THIS A BUILDERS GUIDE.  Each aircar project tends to have differences reflective of its builder.  This is especially true of such a large project, built from plans that were drafted over thirty years ago.  This is my first project and I have kept it a goal to stay close to the plans.  However I have re-engineered those items not clear on the plans, and taken advantage of some techniques that have become more accessible over the last twenty years including: modern epoxies, carbon and Aramid fabrics, vacuum bagging, powder coating, industrial heat treating, etc.
The project has been built using the most current set of plans, that is for model S-12-E.  I do, however, have a set of older plans (S-12 B,C) that I have found very useful for some items.  I have tried to document and clarify any items that were not clear (to me) on the plans.
My goals have been: #1 Build it SAFE, #2 use the best materials available to build it STRONG, #3 Keep it SIMPLE, #4 Keep it STRAIGHT.   Please feel free to contact me through the Yahoo Group if you have any questions.

* to make web maintaince easier, the later chapters now have seperate photo galleries
